Will Ink Wash Out?

Under normal circumstances and with proper care, screen-printed ink should not wash out. The curing process the ink undergoes after application ensures it bonds with the fabric fibers, making it resistant to washing. However, harsh detergents, high temperatures, and excessive washing can potentially degrade the print over time. It's recommended to wash screen-printed items inside out, with cold water, and to avoid direct ironing on the print to maintain its integrity.

Step by Step Breakdown of the Screen Printing Process

1. Design Creation: The process begins with creating a design. Designs are typically created using digital art software like Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw. This artwork is then printed onto a transparent acetate film or directly onto the screen if a shop has a Direct-to-Screen setup like the I-Image from M&R that we use in our shop. This step will be used to create the stencil.
2. Preparing the Screen: A mesh screen is selected and coated with a light-reactive emulsion. The acetate sheet with the design is placed on the screen, and the whole setup is exposed to bright light. The light hardens the emulsion not covered by the design, leaving the areas of the design in liquid form. A Direct-to-Screen setup would have the screen coated with emulsion before the design was transferred to the screen.
3. Washing Off the Emulsion: The screen is then washed with water, clearing away the unhardened emulsion to reveal the stencil of the design.
4. Setup for Printing: The prepared screen is placed on the printing press. The item to be printed is laid flat on the printing board beneath the screen.
5. Applying the Ink: Ink is added to the top end of the screen, and a squeegee is used to pull the ink across the screen, pressing it through the mesh and onto the substrate.
6. Curing the Ink: The printed item is passed through a dryer, where high heat cures the ink, making the design permanent.
7. Repeating for Multiple Colors: If the design requires multiple colors, the process is repeated with different screens for each color, carefully aligned to ensure the final image is accurate.
